Capital Campaign/Challenge Grant
We rose to the challenge!
A generous grant from the Hopkinton-based Egan Foundation has pushed the
Framingham Education Foundation's capital campaign well past its goal of
$100,000 and thereby guarantees the contribution of a matching grant of $100,000
from an anonymous donor.

The Egan grant successfully caps off the Framingham Education
Foundation's 18-month capital campaign, which was spurred by a 2002
challenge from the anonymous donor. During the campaign, the Foundation has
garnered financial support from all corners of the community, including the
TJX Companies Foundation, the Carlisle Foundation, the Framingham Rotary,
dozens of local businesses that participate in the annual Spelling Bee, and
countless Framingham parents, who contributed to the Foundation's C.A.R.E.
(Celebrate and Appreciate Remarkable Educators) program.
Also in May, the TJX Companies Foundation announced that it will award
to FEF a grant of $5,500, which in turn will be used to support the Summer
Activities in Learning Health Initiative (S.A.I.L.-H.I.) program at
Framingham's Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.
The TJX grant, along with the pledge of $20,000 from the Egan
Foundation, puts capital campaign's total at $107,500.
The exact amount of the Egan grant may shift, according to Egan
Foundation representative John McEneny, depending on the proceeds from the
Foundation's June 9 golf fundraiser. Pointing out the Egan Foundation's
focus on early childhood education, McEneny specified that FEF use its Egan
grant to support Framingham's Parent-Child Home Program.
While praising the community for its support, FEF President Lyn Hoyt
singled out the efforts of former FEF Development Director Sherri Sigel.
Without Sherri's efforts on behalf of FEF, and her commitment
throughout the campaign, the Framingham Education Foundation could not have
reached this ambitious goal, Hoyt points out. She worked very hard to
bring the Parent-Child Home Program to the attention of the Egan
Foundation.
The Parent-child Home Program is a home-based literacy and parenting
program that serves families challenged by poverty, low levels of education,
and language barriers to educational success.

Celebrate and Appreciate Remarkable Educators - C.A.R.E.
Looking for a way to say thank you to a particular teacher, administrator, department, or friend of education? The Framingham Education Foundation offers an opportunity to honor or remember this special person by making a contribution to our C.A.R.E. fund. When a contribution is made to C.A.R.E., a specially designed donor card is sent to the honoree or family. The card includes the donor's name and any special sentiment you care to include (no mention of the gift's amount will be made). All proceeds from this program benefit FEF mini-grants, which fund innovative classroom projects throughout the system.
Honoring a special person in the Framingham Public Schools is a great way to say thanks. Bus drivers, teachers, custodians, nurses, secretaries, and administrators can be thanked. Please consider contributing to FEF in honor of a special person who has helped make a difference in the life of your child.

How do you spell C-O-M-M-U-N-I-T-Y S-P-I-R-I-T-?
Don't worry if you need to confer with a colleague to get the answer just right. After all, contestants in the townwide Framingham Education Spelling Bee are allowed to confer with fellow team members throughout the evening as they battle in this friendly War of Words.
Since 1993, the Framingham Education Foundation’s annual adult Spelling Bee has been our primary fund raising event. It’s the only event in town that brings together the local business community with representatives from every school in the District for an evening of fun, a good measure of silliness and some serious displays of spelling prowess. We’re all there to have a good time, but also to raise money to support FEF’s programs.
How does it work? Local businesses sponsor a spelling team; some companies send their own team (and some are regulars who come back year after year to join in the fun.) Others sponsor a team from one of the schools or other organizations. Teams consist of three adults: teachers, older students, parents, friends, who represent their school or organization. Spelling as a team, they compete until they are eliminated, with the winners of each round going on to the Championship Round. Over the past few years, we’ve had spellers from all the FPS schools, FPS administrative offices, School Committee, Framingham State College, high school clubs, and local businesses. Together, they raise almost $10,000, which the foundation uses to fund classroom-based mini-grants for teachers and other employees of the Framingham Public School System.
Admission to the Bee is free, but donations are welcomed and encouraged!
Please visit our 2005 Bee news page to read about our most recent Bee – and please take note of our generous sponsors. We couldn’t do it without them!
